Semaglutide and Tirzepatide are peptide medications that can help people lose weight. Semaglutide is also known as Ozempic or Wegovy.  And tirzepatide is also known as Mounjaro or Zepbound.  Studies show that patients can lose up to 15% of their body weight. This injection is self-administered at home, making it a convenient and accessible option for those looking to lose weight.

Both medications act like a hormone in your body called GLP-1. GLP-1 is responsible for controlling appetite and regulating blood sugar levels, which are key factors in weight management. Semaglutide and tirzepatide injections both help to reduce food cravings and increase feelings of fullness, leading to a reduction in calorie intake and a gradual, sustainable weight loss.  They are not recommended for those with a history of pancreatitis, thyroid cancer or pregnancy.

FAQs about Semaglutide / Tirzepatide for Weight Loss

What is semaglutide / tirzepatide?
Semaglutide / tirzepatide is a medication belonging to the class of GLP-1 receptor agonists. It is primarily used to manage type 2 diabetes and, in higher doses, for chronic weight management in adults with obesity or overweight with at least one weight-related medical issue. The brand names for these injections include Ozempic, Wegovy, Mounjaro and Zepbound.

How is semaglutide / tirzepatide administered?
Semaglutide / tirzepatide is available as an injection. It is administered through subcutaneous injections in the thigh, abdomen, or upper arm.

How often do I need to take semaglutide / tirzepatide injections?
Semaglutide / tirzepatide injections are typically taken once a week. We will provide specific instructions based on your medical condition and treatment goals.

What are the potential side effects of semaglutide / tirzepatide injections?
Common side effects of semaglutide / tirzepatide include nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, constipation, and abdominal pain. Most side effects are mild to moderate and may decrease over time. If you experience severe or persistent side effects, contact us.

Which injection is the best?
Both medications are in a class of medications called GLP-1 RAs. When medications are in the same class they have similar mechanisms of action and similar side effects. At this time studies are slightly in favor of tirzepatide as being slightly more effective. Although, we “hear” that tirzepatides also has less side effects, we have not seen this in the studies we have reviewed.

How do I decide if I want tirzepatide or semaglutide?
We recommend people start with semaglutide and only switch to tirzepatide if semaglutide isn’t working at the full dose. The main reason for this is cost. Tirzepatide is more expensive.

Can I use semaglutide / tirzepatide if I have type 1 diabetes?
Semaglutide / tirzepatide is not indicated for the treatment of type 1 diabetes or diabetic ketoacidosis. It is only approved for managing type 2 diabetes and weight management in specific cases.

Can I take semaglutide / tirzepatide if I am pregnant or breastfeeding?
Semaglutide / tirzepatide is not recommended for use during pregnancy or breastfeeding due to limited data on its safety in these situations. Because of the unknown risks, if you are pregnant, planning to become pregnant, or breastfeeding, we will not prescribe semaglutide / tirzepatide.

Can I use semaglutide / tirzepatide for weight loss if I don't have type 2 diabetes?
Yes. Using semaglutide / tirzepatide for weight loss is considered “off-label” unless you also have at least one weight-related comorbidity, such as hypertension or high cholesterol. It is intended to be used alongside a reduced-calorie diet and increased physical activity.

Will my insurance cover semaglutide / tirzepatide injections?
Insurance coverage for semaglutide / tirzepatide injections varies depending on your specific plan and indication for use. In our experience, most insurance plans are not covering this medication for weight loss. If you do call your insurance company, they will tell you that prior authorization is required…but they leave out that a prior authorization application will not be approved. If you want to attempt insurance coverage, we recommend visiting with an endocrinologist. To reduce costs, our clinic utilizes a compounded form of semaglutide / tirzepatide. Instead of thousands of dollars per month, our vials last longer and cost less. In addition, you can use FSA/HSA funds for this therapy.

Can someone use FSA/HSA for fees including the prescription? Yes

How do I know if semaglutide / tirzepatide is right for me?
We will consider your medical history, current health status, and treatment goals to determine if semaglutide / tirzepatide is appropriate for you. Schedule a free consult to get started and determine if you are a candidate.

What do you monitor during my semaglutide / tirzepatide therapy?
In addition to measuring weight loss progress, we can monitor blood glucose, HgA1c, insulin resistance and cholesterol. We also monitor for side effects like kidney function, retinal health and symptoms of pancreatitis, gallbladder issues, and gastrointestinal side effects.

I have started injections and I am not noticing anything.
Most people experience weight loss and lose a few pounds the first four weeks, but not everyone. Dosing increases over the first several months and if your weight is more resistant, it might take longer to find your effective dose. Increasing doses slowly is extremely important for limiting side effects and avoiding adverse events. Not everyone needs the highest dose, but it can take four months to reach this. semaglutide / tirzepatide work by improving glucose tolerance and insulin sensitivity. It can take a while to reverse these processes. Therefore, it is recommended you stick with injections for at least six months.

Do your best to stay on track! Monitor calories and get some form of daily exercise…even if you can only squeeze in 10 minutes!
